FAMA targets Russia, Qatar for ready-to-eathalal food

JOHOR BAHRU (Sept 26): The FederalAgricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA) is targeting Russia and Qatar as newmarkets for ready-to-eat halal food produced by local small and mediumenterprises (SMEs).

Its Senior Director, Datuk NazipahJamaludin said the two countries were lucrative markets for ready-to-eat halalfoods.

She said while Russia attracted manyforeign tourists, including Muslims, Qatar, being a Muslim-majority country,has a booming halal food market which catered to its population and foreigntourists.

“Let’s explore Russia as its businesscommunity is looking for ways to provide halal foods. No Malaysian halalproducts have penetrated the Russian market.

“Hence, we plan to participate in halalfood exhibitions in Russia, as well as Qatar to expose local entrepreneurs tothe quality of halal foods required by them.

“Among the products that could penetrateboth countries are biscuits, anchovy paste, muruku, fish chips, drinks andsauces," she told reporters after the launch of the FAMA InternationalMarket Export Facilitation Workshop here, today.

The three-day workshop, which started onSept 25 and ends tomorrow, was opened by Johor Health, Environment andAgriculture Committee Chairman Shahruddin Jamal and attended by 60entrepreneurs from all over the country.

Nazipah said for now, more than 200 localSMEs had the capacity to market their products abroad, but they still neededFAMA’s guidance on marketing and product promotion to meet the standardsimposed by importing countries.

She said entrepreneurs also needed seekhalal certification to enable their products to be accepted and marketed widelyabroad.
