Mexico sees potential of halal meat market

By on

Mexico can begin the certification process to export Halal meat products to Muslim nations, since it now meets all relevant preparation and sales guidelines, the Mexican government announced in its publication “Official Journal of the Federation.”
The halal market is one of the fastest growing in the world with a huge potential. However, one of the drawbacks is, MPJ has found, is that there are numerous halal approving boards. Still, the potential should be realized.
Animals for slaughter can only have a vegetable-based diet and cannot have such items prohibited under Islamic law as beef and bone flour. The law also says that the slaughter cannot be carried out in front of other animals.
Claudia Esteves, ProMexico coordinator for Asia and Middle East, said in an interview with Mexican newspaper Peri?dico Reforma that Mexico should seek out new and relevant export markets. She added that this will allow the country to keep developing Halal products.
Yaisa Marrugo, president of Bridge International Network, which assists in opening Muslim nations for Mexican product exports, told the publication that Mexico will prioritize Halal meat exports to the Persian Gulf nations, along with the Muslim communities of China, Russia and even to Southeast Asia.
